Two long estranged brothers — one a cop of limited means, the other a successful doctor — meet in the attic of a New York City brownstone to sort through their deceased parents’ belongings. Decades of sacrifice, resentment, bitterness and jealousies ignite when the fraternal debate moves beyond the costs and values of the items to the values and successes of their own lives. The Price examines the balance between two distinctly opposing points of view as the brothers argue the worth of self-preservation versus familial responsibility.
Director, Michael Menendian, states, “I have wanted to stage The Price for nearly 20 years. I consider this to be one of his finest plays, dealing with universal issues of family loyalty, sibling rivalry and commitment to a certain code of conduct. I want the audience to question what they would do in the shoes of the characters.”
Arthur Miller was an American dramatist who was honored with the Pulitzer Prize, the Jefferson Lecture and many other prestigious awards. Among his best known works are All My Sons, Death of a Salesman, The Crucible and A View From the Bridge.
Director Michael Menendian is a founding member and the Producing Artistic Director of Raven Theatre, where he has directed for many productions, earning numerous Joseph Jefferson and After Dark awards. He recently received a 2010 Jeff nomination for his direction of Raven’s Death of a Salesman. Other productions include Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Hedda Gabler, Jesus Hopped the ‘A’ Train, The Night of the Iguana, Dancing at Lughnasa, Golden Boy, Marvin’s Room, A Streetcar Named Desire, A View from the Bridge, and Glengarry Glen Ross.
The cast of The Price includes: Chuck Spencer (Victor Franz) who is a Raven Theatre ensemble member and was last seen on Raven’s stage in the critically acclaimed Death of a Salesman; JoAnn Montemurro (Esther Franz) who is the Co-Artistic Director of Raven Theatre where she recently directed Bus Stop; Leonard Kraft (Gregory Solomon) who was seen in Raven Theatre’s production of Twelve Angry Men and has also performed with Shattered Globe, Steppenwolf, Timeline and Mary Arrchie and Jon Steinhagen (Walter Franz) who has been seen in Raven Theatre’s productions of Bus Stop, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Odd Couple and Hedda Gabler.

    OPENING SOON AT REDTWIST…

    The Cripple of Inishmaan

    By Martin McDonagh

    Directed by Kimberly Senior

(Director of The Pillowman and Bug)

    ShowTickets
    Opens: Sun, May 13, 3pm
    (details below)
McDonagh’s twisted family dramas were born for the intimacy of Redtwist. And The Cripple of Inishmaan is densely packed with vicious drama, wicked humor, savage truths, and deep humanity, while Kimberly Senior uses her trademark vision, and Jack Magaw’s in-your-lap design, to cram McDonagh’s theatrical stew into a stage the size of a minivan–with no place to hide.
    THE PLAY

The Cripple of Inishmaan is the poignant and darkly funny story of a physically-challenged young man, the small town target of cruel jokes, who becomes starry-eyed when an American film crew comes to a rural outpost near his community to shoot a major motion picture. “Cripple Billy” leaves the town to find a better life through this golden “movie star” opportunity. Eventually he finds some respect and affection from among those who were the genesis of the ridicule. Lastly, in the hands of master dramatist Martin McDonagh, when Billy finds redemption among the townsfolk, a final twist of fate turns the tables again, in true mythic fashion. Pastoral and lyrical, cruel and savage, hilarious and heartwarming, this is McDonagh at his twisted, compassionate best.

Set in the honorable days of baseball before free agency brought on enormous contracts and doping scandals, Mark Harris’ drama follows a super star pitcher from New York and his friendship with a struggling third-string catcher from the country. Bang the Drum Slowly depicts the intense bond that grows between two lives intertwined by chance and kept together by loyalty.
Director Michael Menendian states, “As the son of an immigrant family, I first adopted baseball as my direct identity to American life. I’ve always felt that if you want to understand America, you should understand baseball. Much like how a baseball team succeeds or fails as an ensemble of players committed to a central purpose, the same can be said of theatre and the commitment to a work of art.”
Mark Harris was a novelist, journalist, and educator who found his voice discussing death and tragedy through a humorous and everyday vernacular. Bang the Drum Slowlywas the second of a quartet of novels about baseball players; the others being The Southpaw, A Ticket for a Seamstitch, and It Looked Like For Ever. The most well known of the quartet, Bang the Drum Slowly, was adapted for a television anthology series, a major motion picture, and a stage production.
